While Marburger funded part of his Texas A&M education by working summer jobs and raising and selling calves, it was an Endowed Opportunity Award that ultimately supported his studies and sparked a desire to one day help others. The experience left a lasting impression and gave him a firsthand understanding of the power of scholarships. It also inspired his desire to provide opportunities for future Aggies — a commitment that came full circle with the discovery of oil on the family ranch in 2006.
Turning Fortune Into Opportunity
After enduring the tests of time — including years of drought and even an anthrax outbreak among livestock — the land eventually gave back to Marburger tenfold, almost as if repaying him for his years of careful stewardship. When oil was discovered across the road from his property, a company soon contacted him about drilling rights. Marburger negotiated to retain a quarter of the oil royalties, an unheard-of agreement that reflected both his sharp business sense and impressive bargaining skills.
Even before the oil boom, Marburger had begun giving back to Aggieland, establishing four Endowed Opportunity Awards and a President’s Endowed Scholarship through the Texas A&M Foundation. But with his newfound resources, he expanded that generosity on a much larger scale. Rather than spend his income, he decided to make a difference by donating his royalty checks to the Foundation and turning the resources of his family’s land into scholarships for students. “I found my fortune in the land my ancestors acquired and passed down to me,” he once said. “It’s a gift that I feel fortunate to share with my Aggie family.”
