The Texas A&M Foundation recognized Luz Herrera, professor of law and associate dean for experiential education at the Texas A&M University School of Law, as a recipient of its Partner in Philanthropy Award. Herrera was presented the award Oct. 26 at the law school’s Fort Worth campus.

Established by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees in 2016, the Partner in Philanthropy Award honors faculty and staff who provide dedicated and lasting participation, commitment and creative leadership to philanthropy and Texas A&M. Herrera is the ninth recipient of this prestigious honor.

Professor Herrera’s work is meaningful and is an example to all of us of the power of a selfless idea combined with philanthropy to help build a brighter future.

Herrera was essential in securing an additional $600,000 gift from Cook Children’s for the clinic and continues to work to offer a wide range of experiential education opportunities to the school’s students. Currently, she is focused on obtaining funding for a project to serve the rapidly growing Rio Grande Valley, which is underserved legally. She’s also trying to establish a project to assist elders in the Dallas-Fort Worth area who have unaddressed legal needs related to estate planning, medical care and elder abuse.

Each Partner in Philanthropy Award recipient receives $10,000 they can use to advance their research and teaching or direct to an area of their choice. Herrera plans to use the award’s funds to continue expanding law students’ experiential learning opportunities while helping communities in need.

“In her effort to foster collaboration and partnerships that impact real lives between Texas A&M University and Cook Children’s Hospital, Professor Herrera is helping build a brighter future for Texas,” said Tyson Voelkel ’96, president and CEO of the Texas A&M Foundation. “Thanks to innovative professors like her, Texas A&M law school students will see firsthand the impact of advocating for children and their families. Professor Herrera’s work is meaningful and is an example to all of us of the power of a selfless idea combined with philanthropy to help build a brighter future.”
